Villa spotlight

The biggest private pools

Infinity pools of more than 100 m², a 21-metre pool by the beach and a family villa with two.

How to choose a private pool villa

The lagoon is right there, so why pay for a pool? Ask anyone who has stayed in one. At midday the sand is too hot and the sea is bright enough to hurt, and a shaded pool on your own deck is the best place on the island. At low tide it is the easiest swim you will have all day.

  • Plunge, infinity or lap pool? A plunge pool is for cooling off; an infinity pool runs to the edge of the deck so it seems to meet the sea; a lap pool, like the 9.5 m one at Amilla's Beach Pool Villa, is long enough to swim.
  • Beach or overwater? Beach pool villas usually come with a garden, more shade and more room. Overwater pool villas put the pool on the deck, with steps down into the lagoon.
  • Sunrise or sunset? Many resorts build the same pool villa on both sides of the island. Sunset villas are the most requested and often cost a little more.
  • Speedboat or seaplane? Resorts near Malé are a short boat ride at almost any hour. Raa, Baa and Noonu mean a seaplane, which only flies in daylight.

When to go

The dry season, roughly December to April, is the most popular time, and the best pool villas sell out first, especially over Christmas and New Year. From May to November there is more rain, usually in short showers, with better rates and quieter islands.

FAQ

Resorts with private pool villas: your questions

Do all Maldives resorts have private pool villas?

No. Many resorts have villas both with and without a pool, so check the villa name: it usually says "Pool Villa" or "with Pool". At some, such as Joali, Joali Being, SO/ Maldives and Hilton Amingiri, every villa has one.

Which resorts with private pool villas are closest to Malé?

On this page, SO/ Maldives and Adaaran Prestige Vadoo are about 15 minutes by speedboat, Hilton Amingiri and Grand Park Kodhipparu about 20, and Baros about 25.

Is a beach pool villa or an overwater pool villa better?

It depends on how you like to spend the day. Beach pool villas usually have a garden, more shade and more space. Overwater pool villas have the lagoon below the deck and steps straight into the sea. Many guests split their stay between the two.

Are pool villas good for families?

Yes. Two-bedroom pool villas, such as the Two Bedroom Family Beach Pool Villa at Anantara Dhigu or the family villa with two pools at Joali, give children their own pool and parents a deck to watch from. Young children need watching around any pool, so ask us which villas suit your family.

Which villa has the biggest private pool?

Among the villas on this page, the Four Bedroom Private Wellbeing Ocean Pool Residence at Joali Being, with a 118 m² infinity pool, and its Three Bedroom Wellbeing Beach Pool Residence, with a 105 m² one.
